A bodysuit is a garment designed for women who are in space, on alien worlds, or in combat. It is made of finely woven carbon nanotubes for maximum flexibility and durability. Its purpose is to provide thermal insulation and protection from injury. It can survive temperatures up to 3000 degrees Fahrenheit and can deflect small arms fire.
In 2331, Susan Carmen, a scientist at Sutherland Science, got the idea to make bodysuits for women after experimenting with carbon nanotube fabric. She sought to create something that better suited the female form instead of the bulky spacesuits that came before. A few months later, in January of 2332, she finished her first prototype. When she initially demonstrated it, American Emperor John Brown Jefferson objected, saying it was sexualized. Then Thomas Alda, King of Cascadia, suggested that it could be used for military purposes. A few months later, the Gun Maiden program was created, and Alice Pinegrove became the first of these elite warrior women. The Russian and Chinese Empires would later create similar programs. With the passing of millennia, every major human power would have something resembling the original Gun Maidens.
Bodysuits are highly adaptable. Those used in space travel include a helmet that allow one to survive in toxic environments and the vacuum of space. Those used in combat include a breastplate, vambraces, and greaves, all of which can deflect .30 caliber rounds. Although bodysuits were originally designed for spacefaring women, they became popular with noblewomen who enjoyed wearing them during rifle practice. Theirs are typically embroidered with elaborate designs and often include gold and gemstones.
